2021 Green Resolutions

2021 Green Resolutions

Another year has flown by and you may be contemplating whether you're going to make a New Year's resolution for 2021. Maybe you've made them in the past and lost momentum over time, or maybe you've buckled down and followed through. Either way, you're now faced with the beginning of another new year, and the new year brings amazing opportunities to challenge yourself in many different ways. If you're like me, you’re on the road to a more sustainable lifestyle, you may be thinking about setting some eco-conscious goals for 2021. But where to start and how to follow through?

I’ve compiled a list of ideas to to help you get started on your green resolutions during the coming year:

Start Simple

As the old saying goes, “the secret to getting ahead is getting started,” and one of the best ways to get started is to start simple. First off, do a quick audit of the various rooms in your house and choose one item to swap out from each room. In my case, when I became more aware as a consumer, one of the first (and easiest) swaps I made was my toothbrush! When my plastic toothbrush’s life span had come to an end, I swapped it out with a bamboo toothbrush. As opposed to plastic, bamboo is mostly biodegradable! Bamboo is a fast growing plant and doesn’t require pesticides or fertilizers for cultivation, and whereas a plastic toothbrush can take anywhere from 400-1000 years to decompose, bamboo takes mere months.  These 100% compostable toothbrushes will look great in your bathroom.

Another quick swap you can make in the kitchen is moving from liquid dish soap to a solid dish bar. Milk and Honey Soapery- a Canadian based soapery coldpresses their own;  hand-made, vegan, toxin-free dish soap bar that effectively cleans your dishes - all while being eco-friendly & zero waste!

While you’re in the kitchen, you can easily swap out any plastic containing dish sponges or cleaners with sustainable loofah dishwashing sponges, eco-sponge cloths and dish/pot and jar scrubbers

A Little DIY fun

Another way to follow through with your 2021 sustainability goals is to make it enjoyable,  I- for one have included many new DIY projects in my routine. These do-it-yourself- projects are not only good for the planet but a fun crafting activity for you and your family. I’ve had the personal pleasure of attending a live soap-making class. I made my very own  soaps with essential oil fragrance, and  also made a eucalyptus shower bundle - super fun!

A double win is supporting a sustainable brand that makes the DIY process feel really good. “Make this Universe” is another Canadian brand that assembles kits for DIY Scented Soy wax Candle MakingEverything you'll require to craft  your own 4 oz candle is made ready to gift/ buy/ try during some downtime. For a more practical project, everyone loves a good aluminum -free natural deodorant, they have a DIY set for that too [ nifty wink].  Their kits are sustainably packaged and handmade in their Toronto studio.

Journal or meditate on your goals

Whether it be in a journal or in your meditation corner - think about ways to keep your resolutions in mind. Write down your resolutions in your journal, jot it on a note, and place it on your refrigerator, or keep them in mind during your daily meditative practice. When your resolutions are in your thoughts every day, you’re more likely to follow through with them.

I  found a cool new way to connect with my eco-friendly goals - while sitting on an eco-friendly yoga mat during my meditation! Canadian owned company, B yoga offers a 100% natural cork yoga mat, yoga block and other helpful restorative exercise equipment, made from sustainably harvested cork that provides ultimate comfort, stability and support.

Whatever your personal goals are this year, I'm offering a few self-reflective questions that you can use to check in with yourself to stay on track:

  • What kind of support do I need to follow through with my resolutions this year?
  • What can I do to break old habits that take me off track of my goals?
  • What kindness can I offer myself on this learning curve while staying integrous with my resolutions?

May this New Year bring you more peace, love, and harmony, and remember...

Small steps are the start to big changes.
