Get To Know The Brand: joni
Founder and Owners: Linda Biggs and Jayesh, Vekariya
joni works with grassroots organizations across Canada, as well as NGO's like the United Way, to distribute donated period products to communities and people in need. Since their launch on March 12, 2020, they have donated 44,000+ pads across Canada—that's equivalent to helping over 5200 people who would normally struggle to find period care each month. #getjonigivejoni joni is based out of Victoria, BC.
"Period Rights are Human Rights: we believe in the right for people to bleed without shame, oppression or undue hardship. From the right to decide what products work best for you and having access to safe products regardless of your geographic location or socioeconomic status to the right to identify outside of the binary model as a menstruator - it is all part of the human right to live with dignity."
joni was founded because:
We started our business because of the shocking statistic that 1 in 3 Canadians under the age of 25 are unable to afford period care. We want sustainable and organic period care to be available to everyone who needs it.
What are you most passionate about?
Empowering people using whatever means I have.
What it means to be women in business in 2021?
Considering that women couldn’t get a loan without a man’s signature in the 80’s you can say that we’ve come a long way but there is still so much more work to be done. Only 3% of venture funding goes to women led companies and we know that the higher up the corporate ladder, the less women we see in leadership. What I am seeing in the entrepreneurial space is women supporting women and we’re all celebrating the big wins together because it moves the needle just that much more for everyone.
What celebrity, brand or cause would you collaborate with and why?
We’re not your average period care brand so we would love to collaborate with the Federal Government to build policies around providing free period care products to schools and Universities in Canada so that no one is ever held back by their period.
